A legendary footballing family's story took an exciting turn on a rainy Wednesday in Rabat, Morocco. Zinedine Zidane, the French football icon, witnessed his son Luca Zidane's impressive goalkeeping performance as Algeria kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a dominant 3-0 victory over Sudan.
But here's where it gets controversial... Luca, who plays for Granada in Spain's second division, chose to represent his grandfather's homeland, Algeria, after receiving an invitation from the Fennec Foxes. This decision sparked curiosity and debate among fans and pundits alike.
Algeria, one of the tournament favorites, wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Riyad Mahrez, the star forward, opened the scoring in the second minute, assisted by Hicham Boudaoui's unselfish play. Luca Zidane was soon called into action, denying Yaser Awad on a break. Sudan, due to the ongoing civil war, had to play all their qualification games away from home, adding an extra layer of adversity to their already challenging journey.
Despite Algeria's confident and intense play, Sudan created some big chances. Luca Zidane pulled off a crucial save against Awad, and Abdel Raouf's effort went over the bar. Just before halftime, Sudan's Salah Adil was sent off for a foul on Rayan Aït-Nouri, leaving his team a man down.

Then, in the 85th minute, Baghdad Bounedjah headed the ball into the path of substitute Ibrahim Maza, who completed the scoring with his first international goal.
This win puts Algeria at the top of Group E. Luca Zidane's clean sheet and his father's presence in the stands added an extra layer of emotion to the victory.
And this is the part most people miss... Luca's opportunity came due to an injury to Alexandre Oukidja, who might have started otherwise. Football, as they say, is a game of opportunities, and Luca seized his with both hands.
