Victoria vs Western Australia LIVE: Weitering stretchered off after collision; Daicos shines as Vics seize early lead
Even with the breathtaking skill and the roaring home-ground atmosphere, a heavy silence fell over Perth Stadium when Victorian defender Jacob Weitering absorbed a brutal collision late in the first quarter.
This is precisely the scenario Carlton fans dreaded most: Weitering, a key player, sidelined during a high-stakes State of Origin clash.
He was carried off on a cart, wearing a neck brace, as medical staff worked to determine the extent of the damage—whether it’s a concussion, or injuries to the shoulder or ribs.
Weitering gave a thumbs-up as Victorian medical staff ferried him to the changerooms.
The incident occurred along the Western Australian half-forward line.
As Weitering leaped to spoil Mitch Georgiades, he landed awkwardly on his back, with Georgiades landing heavily on top of him.
The impact forced attention to the collision both across the shoulders and the head, and play was paused while trainers attended to him.
Both the Victorian and Western Australian squads remained separate during the delay.
Carlton coach Michael Voss will be frustrated by the setback, while there’s hope that captain Patrick Cripps remains injury-free for future contests.
Before departing Melbourne on Wednesday, Weitering warned the media that the match would be fiercely contested.
“Boys are going to compete for the jumper and for each other,” he said.
“It’s a rare opportunity. We’ve waited a long time to be able to do this, so I expect the first 10 minutes to be a physical contest.”
Weitering also downplayed fears about personal injury.
“I’m not worried about getting hurt. The preparation, the time invested, and the support around us—from the trainers to the doctors, and the communication between clubs and the AFL—has been solid,” he noted.
The incident briefly overshadowed a game that had otherwise showcased high-level football. Victorian stars Nick Daicos, Zach Merrett, and Hugh McCluggage demonstrated elite skill, helping the visitors overcome a hesitant start and stretch the lead to 20 points by the end of the first quarter after conceding the opening two goals.
The Victorians appear to carry greater firepower, threatening to widen the margin as the match progresses.
