Jupiter Just Got Smaller! New Juno Data Forces Textbook Updates (2026)

Hold onto your textbooks—Jupiter, the colossal ruler of our solar system, might not be as big as we thought. But here's where it gets controversial: new data from NASA's Juno spacecraft suggests the gas giant is slightly smaller and flatter than decades-old measurements indicated. While the difference is minimal—about 15 miles less in polar height and 5 miles less in equatorial width—it’s enough to spark a planetary update in our science books. 'Textbooks will need to be updated,' declares Yohai Kaspi of the Weizmann Institute of Science, one of the study's co-authors. So, what happened? The earlier measurements from the 1970s, taken by NASA's Voyager and Pioneer missions, relied on a technique called radio occultation. This method involved beaming radio signals through Jupiter's atmosphere to gauge its size based on how the signals were altered. And this is the part most people miss: those measurements didn't fully account for Jupiter's powerful winds, which can skew the results. Enter Juno, orbiting Jupiter since 2016, which uses a more precise method. During its orbits, Juno's radio signals are temporarily blocked and distorted as it passes behind Jupiter from Earth's perspective, allowing scientists to measure the planet's size with greater accuracy. Using 24 such measurements, the team now estimates Jupiter's polar diameter at about 83,000 miles and its equatorial diameter at 89,000 miles. While Jupiter's crown as the largest planet remains secure, this discovery raises a thought-provoking question: How many other celestial bodies might we need to remeasure with modern technology? Could our understanding of the cosmos be due for a major overhaul? Let us know what you think in the comments—is this a small tweak or a game-changer for planetary science?
