Ferry Fares on the Rise: A Controversial Move?

While the DfI claims the increase is in line with inflation, some locals argue that the frequency and magnitude of these hikes are excessive. Naomi McNally, a regular ferry user, notes that the recent price surge follows a 30% increase in 2024, leaving her feeling taken advantage of.
"It's taking the mick a little bit," she says. "The foot passenger rate is still reasonable, but the car fare is excessive for such a short journey."

"In the last 12 to 15 months, we've seen a 40% increase in fares, which is significant across the board," he explains.

Locals now face an uncertain future with increased fares and no clarity on when the next hike might occur. Councillor Boyle expresses his disappointment, stating, "It's yet another increase to the normal household budget, which is already stretched thin with fuel, heating oil, and food costs."
