Charles Leclerc, the Ferrari driver, dominated the morning session on day four, setting the fastest lap time of 1m33.739s on prototype tires. This performance showcased the top teams' superiority over the midfield, with Leclerc's time just a whisker away from last week's benchmark.
But here's where it gets controversial... Leclerc's lap was 0.070s slower than the previous week's record, which might seem insignificant, but it sparked a debate among fans and experts. Some argue that it's a sign of the top teams' dominance, while others believe it could be a strategic move to hide their true pace.
Leclerc's performance wasn't just a one-off; he topped the timesheets in Bahrain last Thursday as well, solidifying his position as a frontrunner. Reigning world champion Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, came in second, 0.313s behind Leclerc.
Mercedes' young gun, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who set the pace last week, rounded out the top three, but he was 0.419s off Leclerc's pace. Alex Albon, in fourth place, was even further behind, highlighting the gap between the top teams and the midfield.
The midfield battle was intense, with some close wheel-to-wheel action. Albon had a brief encounter with Antonelli, who overtook him with ease, showcasing the power difference between the frontrunners and the midfield.
While these laps might not mean much in the grand scheme of things, they do provide an insight into the season ahead. Esteban Ocon's claim that the midfield is "seconds away" from the top four teams - McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull - seems to be supported by the lap times.
However, Red Bull, the last of the top four teams, couldn't fully showcase their potential on Wednesday morning due to a technical issue. New signing Isack Hadjar was limited to just 13 laps in the RB22, with a pressure problem in one of the coolant circuits causing a setback.
Despite the limited running, Hadjar managed to set the sixth-fastest lap, just 0.290s off fifth place. Pierre Gasly, in the Alpine, secured fifth position, with the remaining spots filled by Ocon, Fernando Alonso, Nico Hulkenberg, Arvid Lindblad, and Sergio Perez.
And this is the part most people miss... Perez, driving for Cadillac, completed only 24 laps due to mechanical issues. He skipped the opening hour and didn't start proper running until the final 90 minutes, which could have impacted his overall performance.
