The AirPods Max 2: An Upgrade, But Not a Reimagining
Apple's latest iteration of its premium headphones, the AirPods Max 2, has arrived, but is it a significant step forward or just a minor update? After all, it's been over five years since the original AirPods Max hit the market, and the wait for a successor was beginning to feel like an eternity.
The Good:
Sound Quality: The AirPods Max 2 sound incredible, thanks to a new built-in amp and the upgraded H2 chip. The bass is full and defined, while the midrange vocals and instruments are easily delineated. The headphones support lossless audio at 24-bit/48kHz, providing a rich and immersive listening experience.
Noise Cancellation: Apple's adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) is top-notch, blending transparency and ANC to adjust to your surroundings. It's a seamless and effective feature, and I appreciate how it allows me to stay aware of my environment without compromising sound quality.
Build Quality: The headphones feel solidly built with a stainless steel headband, aluminum ear cups, and memory foam ear cushions. They have a premium feel, setting them apart from competitors like Sony and Bose, which often use plastic.
The Bad:
Case and Carrying: The case is still a poor excuse for protection, offering virtually no defense for the headphones. It's a flexible wrap that puts the headphones into a deep sleep state, but it's not a practical solution for travel or everyday use. Sony, Bose, and other brands offer structured cases that provide better protection.
Weight and Comfort: The AirPods Max 2 are heavy at 385 grams, significantly heavier than competitors like the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose Ultra Headphones. The clamping force can be too much for some, causing discomfort after extended periods of wear.
No Power Button: The lack of a power button is a minor inconvenience, but it's a feature that many users, including myself, would appreciate. A toggle to completely power down the headphones would be a welcome addition.
Price: At $549, the AirPods Max 2 are still more expensive than the competition, even with the recent price hike. The Sony XM6 and Bose Ultra Headphones offer similar features at a lower price point.
My Takeaway:
The AirPods Max 2 are undoubtedly great headphones, but they're not the right choice for everyone. While they excel in sound quality and noise cancellation, the lack of a proper carrying case, the weight, and the price make them a less appealing option compared to competitors. Apple could have made a more ambitious update by addressing these design flaws, but for now, I'll have to wait for the AirPods Max 3 to get the headphones I've been longing for.
